Q&A: What’s Ghostwriting?

by Myles Saulibio

There was once a marketer. Let’s call him Tom. Tom was pretty good at doing what he did.

His online business focused on niche information products and affiliate marketing.

Just like any other day, Tom went online to check out one of his blogs and social networking sites everything seemed normal. But today was different. Terribly different…

When Tom’s browser window opened, he felt like a herd of raging, angry bulls were after him. Tom’s mouth dropped in disbelief. He was beginning to have a panic attack.

Shocked, sweat beginning to pour, Tom trembled as he read some of the posted entries from his customers. ” This is a lot of crap… you called this information! ,” came a reply from Mary in Texas.

That was one of the polite posts he saw.

“You call this English?” wrote David from California.

Tom imagined seeing a cloud of smoke billowing from his monitor. Tom also imagined less money coming in but most important of all his tarnished reputation online.

Tom’s case is not unique. He probably paid dirt cheap for his articles that were written overseas. Maybe you know of a similar story. Possibly  even happened to you.

Although the price of the articles were cheap for Tom,  in the end there was a huge cost involved.

The ability and creativity to use ghost writing services properly means freedom for today’s marketer and webmaster. Although it can be easily misunderstood, ghostwriting services is an important part of your overall marketing strategy.

Here are some of the most frequently asked ghost writing questions you may have to consider:

1.  What’s Ghostwriting?

Ghostwriting is the act of outsourcing articles or any written content you could do for yourself but written by a professional freelance writer, usually not an employee of your company.

2.  When should I start outsourcing my writing to a ghostwriting service?

You should only outsource when you’re ready to financially and if you are prepared to delegate and give clear instructions to basically a stranger. Contract a good-quality ghostwriting services whom you will be able to get along with.

“Partner”   carefully to the point where both you and the service provider are comfortable with each other’s expectations and results.

Some ghostwriting services are from overseas which is okay, provided the quality output  of the English  written is readable, grammatically correct, and effective.

3.  How easy is it to outsource my article writing?

There are many resources online for freelance writers willing to work for clients such as you. This means you should have more than enough choices to evaluate and later make a decision.

Once you have narrowed your choice down to a few, do your homework–––interview, then weighing the benefits and costs before reaching a final decision. Lastly, in all outsourcing activities, be prepared to sign a contract agreement to protect yourself legally.

Your  your choice reflects ultimately on your personal branding and business image as the ghostwriting products are your property but prepared by others.

Many freelancers are professionals so you should have no problems unless you made a poor choice to begin with.

4.  What are the benefits of outsourcing my article writing to a ghostwriting service?

Your benefits will depend on the quality of service received in the products themselves. Ultimately you are in control and the freedom from work itself will allow you to focus on building a business and customer relationships.

The degree of positive benefits is in direct proportion to the amount of rework and miscommunications, which can be disastrous if not carefully managed. He may find some ghostwriting service providers need more frequent supervision and guidance.

A good rule of thumb may be to terminate their contract before project disaster strikes. Trust your instincts.

5.  How much should I pay for ghostwriting services?

Fees–––including cost per word or total cost for an article–vary among ghostwriting services. You want to pay fair and reasonable prices for quality articles but don’t overpay.

Freelance sites like Elance.com provide some benchmark for prices and could be a good starting point.  Use this simple general rule when it comes to ghostwritten articles: “cheap things aren’t good and good things aren’t cheap”.

If you are on a strict budget, better stick to it.

6.  I have problems with my current ghostwriter. What’s the best way to deal with the product I didn’t quite ask for?

When starting the project with the ghostwriting service, it pays to always outline his specific wants, needs, and the desired outcome besides achieving a 500 word count.

It helps to be as specific as possible: topics in special article titles if necessary. Outsourcing requires a level of personal trust and patience. This is perhaps the most delicate task of all.

Most, if not all professional and experienced writers would deliver what the what they promise: fresh unique content you and your customers will be happy with for a long time to come.

7.  What other things should I be concerned with before deciding to outsource to ghostwriting service?

If you  choose to outsource your article writing projects, the simple act of requesting sample articles first will be a lifesaver.

This alone will allow  used to determine if the ghostwriting service is a right fit for you.

Ask yourself these quick questions:

(1) Does the deliverable/project meet or exceed your expectations?

(2) Does the article past the uniqueness test, i.e.  Copyscape?  you should never pay for an article that is a copy of someone’s published works or you will pay for the consequences of plagiarism.

So what happened to Tom?  That’s a good question.  But I think he’s a lot smarter than before.
